Just an average ordinary day...almost

So, today was busy with the preparation for our new Children's department to open at the library. We were hanging shelves and moving books here and there...it wasn't bad or difficult...

Tomorrow is Kim's last day at the Library. If you don't know Kim, I bet you wish you did because she is a phenominal person and a great friend. Jesse (my former boss) and I hired her about 11 years ago to work in the sorting department and she is certainly one of the best hires I ever made!

So, Kim...if you're reading this...we will miss you! You're one of the best!

Last night was music practice and while I still love playing and learning the drums, I have discovered that I am somewhat of an uncoordinated mess! I can drum just fine with my hands, but for whatever reason my foot (which ordinarily keeps time very well) cannot seem to maintain a beat on the bass drum to save it's life!

Once I start on the bass, then I lose the rhythm I have going on the snare and the high hat. I promised myself I won't get frustrated, but I can't fathom why I can't accomplish this simple task!!!??? I seem to do fine otherwise!!!

One of my favorite customers, Byron...died this past weekend. He was 90 years old and sharp as a tack! He would call me about once a week to talk movies and television. He was hoping to get through the most recent season of the "Sopranos" so he could see how it ended. I'm going to miss talking with him...he was a great guy!

So, other than music...baseball has been on my mind lately. Jared's team had their home opener and won 4-3. Jared also cut his leg pretty bad sliding in during practice last night...I'm not sure how he did it, but it looks painful.

That's my week so far...how's your's been?

Should old acquaintence be forgot

I recently went back through some old e-mails and came across one from noted Author David L. Robbins (Author of "War of the Rats," "End of War," "Scorched Earth" and one of my all time favorites, "Souls to Keep") After reading it, I had to chuckle because David's e-mails are always intelligent, insightful and very witty.

I thought to myself, "Self, Why don't you e-mail him back? It's been a couple of years...what the heck? Just write and say Howdy."

I met Mr. Robbins about ten years ago at a seminar on "new authors" that was being held at the American Library Association's annual meeting in the Nation's Capitol. He was reading and signing copies of his first book "Souls to keep" which is the story of a woman trying (more or less) to solve her own murder. It's funny, it's romantic, it's touching and has baseball in it...so, it really is the perfect book.

Long story not-so-short...soon after returning to the Kansas City area and reading the book, I posted a review of it on Amazon.com where I raved and raved about said book. Soon after, I received a very nice thank-you e-mail from Mr. Robbins in appreciation of my opinion. I responded back, and we began to regularly exchange emails about writing, baseball and other noteworthy things.

So, it's been fun re-writing to David L. Robbins, and hopefully soon I can read his newest book "The Betrayal Game," which looks intriguing and action-packed. (To be honest, I've liked all of his books and someday I hope he can say the same about mine if I ever actually publish one!)

In the meantime, read anything and everything by David L. Robbins and visit his website at www.davidlrobbins.com . His books are available online and at your nearest Barnes & Noble.

Good to hear from you, Dave... keep writing!

A different drummer

I've got to say that drum lessons are the most fun I've had in ages! Maybe this is my mid-life crisis, but if this is it, I'm having a blast! I'll try to post some pictures soon! (If you can handle them!)

In any event, we're rocking out to the Eagles, Bruce and any number of classic rock groups and as they say at McDonald's "I'm lovin' it!"

In other news, we had a whopper of a storm last night and although it hailed for about 15 minutes straight, I didn't notice any high winds until this morning when I spotted tent stakes and bungee cords in my yard... So hey, if you live in Eastern Jackson County, Missouri and you're missing part of your tent or camping gear...I may have it.
If you can describe the items I've mentioned and provide two types of ID and a blood sample then they're yours!

Like I said, it hailed like mad, and lightninged like crazy and rained like the devil. (any other adjectives will have to wait since I may have approached the legal limit.) Socks, loyal and true, woke me up with a whimper and a wet nose on my arm.
She also managed a pretty hefty howl at the Earthquake last week, but that's another story as I slept through the trembling and only awoke to tell her to stop howling.
(Darn! I missed my first Earthquake! Does the one at Universal Studios count?)

So, that's it other than Dustin is sick, Luke is fine and my arm still hurts from drumming...or it could be from pitching to Jared... who knows...
Heck, I'm 43, I could have slept on it wrong for all I know!

One last note... big prayers for my Dad who is having some heart procedures done tomorrow! We love you, Dad! Take care!

Green Home/Fat Gut

I really want to win HGTV'S Green Home giveaway. Not that I really have a desire to move to South Carolina...but it's a neat house and I need a vacation.

Work has been busy lately, and between baseball and music lessons (which are a blast, by the way...) I'm tired A LOT!

Add to the mix my overdose of Potato Salad at work these past two days (which results in wacky stomach reactions thanks to eggs, onions, mayo and mustard).
You'd think I'd know better, but at the age of 43 I've discovered that when I get hungry I will eat almost anything. (Including a sample of salmon at Sam's Club...wait, I hate SALMON!) So, stomach 1 brain 0... round one goes to stomach.

This could explain why I'm fatter today than I've ever been. I drink Waaaay too much pop. I eat okay and I don't gorge out on stuff, but pop is a huge downfall for me.
Two years ago I lost 25 lbs. by stopping pop and cutting back on fried foods... Gee, why aren't I doing that now? You'd think after losing two friends to heart attacks in the past year I would wise up.

Plus, I have a high school reunion this summer. Do I want to go to it looking like Orca the Killer Whale? Nope, not so much...

So Dave, Wise up...Slim Down, drop the pop and move to South Carolina!

If only life were so simple...

That's just the way it is baby...

So today has been a TERRIBLE day...

I stopped at Quik Trip during a thunderstorm and couldn't get the gas pump to start. Then, I couldn't get it to stop and ended up going over the amount I wanted to purchase by three dollars! (okay, so it's only a thimble-full more gas, but still!)

Then I decide to pay at the pump (which never works out well for me) and the receipt got stuck in the machine... So I go inside to buy pop and when I go to put the lid on, it won't fit! So I push on it a bit harder and the whole side of the cup splits open and gets squashed because I'm pushing down on it.

Pop shoots out both sides and the straw hole in the top. Straws are wet, lids are wet, the counter is wet, the guy next to me now has brown specks of Dr. Pepper all over his shirt and pants...the lady next to me has it on her shoes, and I (miraculously) have very little on me at all!

I apologize profusely and the guy and the lady are cool about it. The Quik Trip worker seems really ticked and goes to get a mop. By this time I don't want any more pop and am somewhat scared to even try it...but I do, and all goes well.

I get to work only to discover that someone has piled their work all over the place in my work space... Now, I can do this work quite easily and quickly, so I do...but the more I think about it, the more angry I get...BECAUSE THIS PERSON COULD HAVE DONE THIS JUST AS EASILY AS ME AND CHOSE TO BE LAZY AND LEAVE IT FOR ME INSTEAD!
What a crappy thing to do! Me, being non-confrontational, seethes for about two hours and never says anything. (Well, I did mention it to other people...)

Since then, the day has gone okay...

So, how's your day?

John McCain, KU Basketball, Jared, Dustin and Me

So today I was on my way to work when they announced on the radio that John McCain was speaking in town and would be having lunch at the Kansas City Club. My first thought was "SHOOT!" because where I work is right across the street from the Kansas City Club. I was wishing I'd brought my camera.

Around 11:40 I was working and looked out the window to see a dark suburban pull up outside. I told Michele and Paul, two of my co-workers, that I thought the Senator had arrived. We went outside onto the sidewalk, and out of the SUV popped John McCain, looking younger and shorter in person than he does on TV. He seemed friendly and was smiling and waving... I thought it was kind of neat from my vantage point 20 feet away.

I got back to my office later and called the Parks and Rec department to see how Jared had ended up doing on his Junior Olympic Competition, and as it turns out...he got first place! He goes to regionals in May! Please excuse the previous post on this blog...something is wrong with the video and we're trying to fix it...

Dustin is taking music lessons from our friend, John...who is also nice enough to be teaching Jared a few things on the guitar. We went to his house on Sunday and listened to his band rehearse...THEY'RE REALLY, REALLY GOOD! Anyway, he's working on the bass with Dustin.
John's a great guy and a good musician and a decent singer too!

Tonight Jared and I rooted for KU...(Hey, we're really MU fans, but they weren't in the playoffs!) KU had us worried until they tied it up with 2.1 seconds left and then went on to win the game! WHEW!

Just a side note... Tomorrow is the Royals Home Opener.... GOOD LUCK GUYS! BEAT THOSE YANKEES!
